Sandeman launches 50 Year Old Tawny Port

Sandeman’s reputation for aged tawny port is second to none: they are regular winners of gold medals and trophies at the Decanter World Wine Awards. So it is with great excitement and expectation that I received a sample of their newly launched 50 year old tawny which was launched at the beginning of September this year. It is a blend of wines aged for between 40 and 70 years, carefully put together by Luís Sottomayor who was recently named IWC Fortified Winemaker of the Year 2022. It is priced at £330 and it is worth it!

Sandeman 50 Year Old Tawny Port *****

Lovely pale orange -tawny hue with just a glint of green on the rim; exuberant, lifted yet refined on the nose, butterscotch with a touch of of cedar and the merest hint rancio from prolonged ageing in cask; soft, silky and beautifully mellifluous on the palate, seamlessly smooth from start to finish, undeniably rich in style (125 g/l residual sugar), crystalised apricots with just a hint of leathery-savoury age on the finish but still so fresh and long on the finish. Thrilling, flawless tawny. 20
