Barca Velha 1966

This wine is as rare as hen's teeth and I have only tasted it on one previous occasion (in 1998). It was served blind at a restaurant in Denmark and I was astounded when the bottle was revealed. I went back to my 1998 note and was pleased to see that it is very little different from the note below. It is clearly evolving very slowly. This wine is historic.

Barca Velha 1966 ****/*****

Still relatively youthful in appearance, amazingly deep at the centre; a little hollow (or just closed) initially on the nose, a hint of tar and tobacco, a touch rustic in style with the alcohol evident but some finesse underlying; wonderful sinewy, leathery fruit, gravelly tannins underlying, still quite tough and holding together very well. Amazing for its age. 18.5  [My note in 1998 read: still upright and concentrated with a touch of tobacco box and a long sinewy finish that has become Barca Velha's hallmark].

Location: Den gamle kro restaurant, Odense
