Eighty percent of the country is suffering from severe or extreme drought at the moment after a hot, dry July. There is a map showing a huge orange blob at the centre of the country where the drought is most severe and forest fires have broken out all over Portugal, fanned by warm winds. But Portalegre seems to have escsped the worst and we still have plenty of water with the springs on the quinta are still flowing. Temperatures approached 40oC in much of southern Portugal over the weekend then it rained in parts of the Alentejo but not enough to make any difference to the severity of the drought.
