You can tell a good vintage by the smell…

I recall the late Bruce Guimaraens (head wine maker for Taylor and Fonseca) saying that you could tell a good vintage by the smell in the winery. I now know what he means. With two vats of Trincadeira now fermenting there is a lovely fresh smell of pure fruit in the winery. The fermenting must looks good too with excellent colour and some structure emerging. If the Trincadeira is as good as it looks this year (and it makes up almost a third of the vineyard) then we are heading for a good vintage. We have taken a pause from picking today which is perhaps as well as the thermometer hit 35oC here in the afternoon. We begin again tomorrow at 6am when it is relatively cool and the pickers should have finished by lunchtime. Aragonez first followed by Syrah on Saturday
