Unfortunately outside the winery there is another smell. I have spent much of the first two days of the harvest unblocking drains, a shitty task if ever there was one! It reminds me of the owner of an English stately home that I met at a Historic Houses Association conference. Like many such properties nowadays, to make ends meet he hosted weddings. It is just that the drains couldn’t cope with the number of people, so nearly every Saturday night when the guests were enjoying themselves, he had to roll his sleeves up and unblock the drains. Contrary to what many people think, owning and running a vineyard and winery isn’t all wine and roses!
