I have been reluctant to submit any of our wines to competitions until this year. Not only am I rather sceptical about some wine competitions, I have also been serving since 2004 as Regional Chair of the Decanter World Wine Awards for Portugal, Port and Madeira. This year I have had to give up on chairing Portugal, simply due to the fact that there are now so many entries that it is now impossible for me to taste so many wines in the space of a week. So in handing over to Sarah Ahmed it gave me an opportunity to submit Pedra Basta to the Decanter World Wine Awards for the first time, without coming near to our own wine! Having been involved with the Decanter World Wine Awards since its inception I know the organisation well and consider it to be the most thorough and most fair of all the wine competitions. The wines are judged in a calm environment by small panels with specialist knowledge of their subject matter. Producers who submit their wines can be sure that they will be be looked at in context and treated fairly. So today it came as wonderful news to find that Pedra Basta 2008 has won a silver medal. I can't take much of the credit as I was absent for most of the 2008 harvest due the birth of our daughter, Isabella. But Rui Reguinga and José Luís Marmelo who ran the vintage almost on their own deserve big parabens!
Next year we go for gold with Pedra e Alma.
