The April showers have been falling on Portugal this year rather than England. Whereas much of the British Isles have enjoyed two exceptionally dry and sunny months, Portugal has been unusally wet . The barragem is full to overflowing and the vines are sprouting in all directions. We have weeds growing knee height in the vineyard. It is too early to draw any conclusions but with plenty of ground water we could be heading for another large crop in 2011. It all depends on the weather during the flowering.

It is Dia de Mentira (April Fool's Day) and I am in Funchal for our distributor's annual tasting. We have recently changed our distributor in Portugal to a company called Portfolio. They are 60% owned by the Symington's of Port wine fame but distribute a number of wines from different parts of Portugal as well as Pol Roger, Hugel, Château de Beaucastel and Concha y Toro among others so we are in very good company. There are certainly no mentiras here!
