These days the construction of a museum seems to be emblematic of a sector of the economy on the brink of collapse. Where I come from in the north of England there is a hat museum in Stockport (where no hats are made any longer) and in Liverpool a museum to the entire city is due to open next year (very little is made in this once great port city any longer). In Portalegre we are to have a Cork Museum which will open in the bankrupt Robinson cork factory (see the entry for Thursday 1st November 2007). When this era of mass travel draws to a close (as it surely will at some stage) I wonder if there will be a museum of tourism.
